At 27 discs, Pink Floyd's The Early Years 1965-1972 box set last fall was formidable, to say the least. Now the group is whittling into to bite-size pieces. On March 24 the group will release five two-disc sets culled from the set and focusing on different periods of Pink Floyd's history: 1965-1967 Cambridge St/Ation, 1968 Germin/Ation, 1969 Dramatis/Ation, 1970 "Devi/Ation and 1971 "Reverber/Ation. The individual sets will feature previously released and familiar Floyd tracks as well as rarities and unreleased material featured on the original box set and the companion Cre/Ation two-disc companion. Drummer Nick Mason tells us he's happy that the group's early days are getting this kind of archival treatment:
"I think we'd sort of looked at different ways of doing it in different periods for quite a long time, but this just felt like the most sensible thing to concentrate on...I think it's partly because for so many people their Pink Floyd experience starts in about 1973 with 'Dark Side;' It's probably the sort of era where people know the very least about us, and I think the whole business of revisiting the Syd Barrett era and the development of the band between the Syd period and beyond into just pre-'Dark Side' is perhaps something...people just know less about and might interest them."
The individual volumes are available for pre-order at The-Early-Years.PinkFloyd.com.   Gary Graff is an award-winning music journalist who not only covers music but has written books on Bob Seger, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.
