John Mellencamp hits the road again in June for a Sad Clowns & Hillbillies Tour promoting his new album of the same title.

Mellencamp will be joined on the 22-date trek by Carlene Carter, who’s featured throughout the album, Emmylou Harris and the duo Lily & Madeleine. The tour kicks off June 4 in Denver and is scheduled through July 11, with tickets on sale for most shows on February 24.

The trek brings Mellencamp back to outdoor amphitheaters, but he tells us he chooses venues very carefully anymore:

“I can’t go out in front of 10,000 drunk people and play. There’s just nothing there to do for me with that. I’m a musician. I’m a songwriter. You’re here to hear music, if that’s what you want to do and you think it’s worthy. But I’m not here for your folly and you’re throwing up, too. I really have no interest in doing that…It’s fine if people want to be drunk and dance to music. That’s what those (big) places are for, but that’s not what I want to do.”

Fans who buy tickets online Mellencamp’s tour will receive a physical copy of the Sad Clowns & Hillbillies album, which comes out April 21.
