Often called “The Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Chuck Berry was found dead by St. Charles County police in a residence outside of St. Louis Saturday.

In a post on the St. Charles County police Facebook page, officers responded to a medical emergency around 12:40 p.m. (1:40 p.m. ET) at a residence and found an unresponsive Berry inside.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legenday musician Chuck Berry.”

Berry, widely considered one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll music, was known for his songs such as “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Rock and Roll Music,” and “Johnny B. Goode.”  He helped to refine and develop rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive with lyrics that focused on consumerism and teen life while showcasing guitar solos and showmanship that influenced rock music to this day.
