Alaska Airlines flight attendant Amber May got a weird request from a passenger last year – she was asked if she could help keep some eggs warm. A zoo employee was carrying six Chilean flamingo eggs from Atlanta to Seattle, but the portable incubator failed. May filled rubber gloves from the galley with warm water, knotted them and made a nest around the eggs. Other passengers handed over jackets, sweaters and scarves to wrap around the eggs for extra warmth, and the flight attendants took turns refilling the gloves with warm water during the 5.5 hour flight. Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo said May’s actions saved the chicks’ lives. About a month later, all six eggs hatched, and May was invited to meet them and name one. She said “My 6-month-old granddaughter is named Sunny, so I decided that was the perfect name for a flamingo chick.”
