During a new interview with The Sunday Times, the Who’s Pete Townshend opened up about his mental health issues and his struggle with “chemical depression.” The musician writes in his journal each morning, trying to rid himself of dark thoughts that plague his mind. “When I first wake up I’m suicidal, actually suicidal,” the 79-year-old Townshend disclosed. He says he typically gets up between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. each day, explaining, “I’m still in the state that I was the day before.” Townshend will have a cup of tea then start writing, which helps ease his troubled mind. “So now I just write journals. Every morning I rebuild myself in a sense with tea and coffee, and a few vitamin pills,” Townshend says. “If I start my journals before I have my cup of tea, I’ll paint a very bleak picture of my life. Despite the fact that I have everything that I want and everything that I need … And I have had a really extraordinary life.” (Consequence of Sound)
